Cassava Technologies is strengthening Africa’s digital infrastructure with the addition of Egypt’s largest data centre and the country’s first sovereign AI Factory, in partnership with Elsewedy Electric and Vodafone Business Egypt.
The two initiatives form part of Cassava Technologies’ broader strategy to expand digital infrastructure and position Africa to participate more fully in the global AI economy.
The sovereign AI Factory will initially provide 20MW of capacity, with a pathway to scale to approximately 200MW. According to Cassava Technologies President and Group CEO Hardy Pemhiwa, Africa currently accounts for less than 1% of global data centre capacity, presenting a significant opportunity for growth.
The AI Factory is designed to provide locally hosted AI infrastructure, giving organisations greater control over their data while supporting regulatory compliance, cybersecurity and the development and deployment of AI applications at scale.
The new data centre will provide the underlying infrastructure, while the AI Factory will leverage that capacity to support AI innovation, investment and regional growth.
Egypt is expected to play an important role in Cassava Technologies’ continental strategy, with its infrastructure positioning the country as a potential regional hub for data, cloud and AI services serving both Africa and the Middle East.
The development also highlights the growing push for sovereign digital infrastructure in Africa, as governments and businesses seek greater control over the data and computing resources needed to power the continent’s AI ambitions.
